Our programme places a strong emphasis on safety and effectiveness in procedural sedation, aligning with the latest SASA Guidelines for Procedural Sedation and Analgesia, as well as international sedation guidelines. Here’s what you can expect from our course:

1. Comprehensive Structure

  • The Short Course in Sedation and Pain Management spans one year.
  • Students will complete modules equivalent to 60 credits (approximately 600 study hours), equivalent to a PG Certificate.
  • The programme comprises four core modules, each with 15 credits.

2. Flexible Learning

  • With 9-10 contact days throughout the year, our programme balances electronic engagement with face-to-face demonstrations and simulations.
  • Online teaching occurs in two blocks during March and November 2024.
  • Between these blocks, students participate in 3 days of clinical/practical training in Bloemfontein or a comparable facility, including supervised clinical training with a mentor.

3. Comprehensive Teaching and Assessment

  • Our programme combines lectures, clinical skills seminars, problem-based learning, and mentor-supervised clinical sessions for sedating patients.
  • Students receive vital simulation training to manage medical emergencies effectively.
  • Assessment methods include a portfolio, log book, assessed practical cases, a problem-based learning presentation, written examinations, and a 2,000-word referenced essay.
  • Clinical skills and attitudes are also assessed by mentors during clinical attachments.

  • Operator Sedationists, qualified to conduct procedures and administer drugs for pain and anxiety relief through procedural sedation.
