#PRESIDENT’S NOTE
ABOUT SOSPOSA
Dear Members,
I am delighted to introduce SOSPOSA, the Society of Sedation Practitioners of South Africa, an organization that has been established with the vision of advancing sedation practice and enhancing patient care. Founded by Prof James Roelofse, a distinguished figure in the world of sedation training and program development, SOSPOSA brings together a wealth of knowledge and expertise to benefit its members and the wider patient community.
Prof Roelofse’s vast experience as the academic and former head of sedation training at prestigious institutions such as University College London, the University of the Western Cape, and Co Program Director of the sedation program at the University of the Free State, ensures that SOSPOSA’s academic standards remain exemplary. As the Life Honorary President of SOSPOSA and an executive member of the International Committee on the Advancement of procedural sedation and analgesia (ICAPS), Prof Roelofse’s influence extends globally, enriching the resources available to our members.
We are immensely proud to have achieved recognition on an international scale as the 13th member of the International Federation of Dental Anaesthesiology Societies (IFDAS). This affiliation provides us with a valuable network and collaborative opportunities, ultimately benefiting our members and, most importantly, our patients. By aligning ourselves with organizations actively involved in pain and anxiety control, we affirm our commitment to ensuring optimal patient comfort and safety.
An essential aspect of our success lies in our partnership with the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA), where SOSPOSA is privileged to serve as a Special Interest Group (SIG). The unwavering support and collaboration with SASA have been instrumental in enabling SOSPOSA to publish guidelines on Procedural Sedation and Analgesia for adults and children in 2010, 2020, and 2021. The positive response to these guidelines underscores the significance of our mission to uphold the highest standards of sedation practice and patient well-being in our country.
As we continue on this journey of growth and excellence, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our members for their commitment to SOSPOSA. Your participation and engagement enrich the society and reinforce our collective mission to advance sedation practices and ensure patient safety.
We look forward to an exciting future, one that is dedicated to continual learning, collaboration, and enhancing patient experiences. Together, we can make a significant difference in the field of sedation practice, benefitting countless lives in the process.
Thank you for being part of SOSPOSA, and we assure you of our unwavering dedication to your professional development and patient welfare.
Prof James Roelofse: Founder and Life-time President of SOSPOSA.

#DOES IT MATTER?
WHY SHOULD MY SEDATION PRACTITIONER BELONG TO SOSPOSA?
Who is SOSPOSA and why should a patient prefer to use a sedation practitioner for sedation that is an active member of SOSPOSA.
The Society Of Sedation Practitioners of South Africa, also known as SOSPOSA, is a group of trained, registered and regularly appraised doctors. They have proven to be competent and safe sedation practitioners, not only because of their initial training and certification but their constant continued professional education, attendance of sedation congresses and colleague interactive training programs.
