Session 1 — Principles of Safe Procedural Sedation
Defining levels of sedation, patient selection and risk assessment, monitoring requirements, airway considerations, and prevention and management of common complications — with a sedation risk-assessment workshop using patient case scenarios.

Session 2 — Sedation Pharmacology in Clinical Practice
Propofol pharmacology and clinical application, opioids and adjunctive agents, balancing efficacy and safety, special populations and recovery — with agent-selection and dose-adjustment exercises.

Session 3 — Introduction to TIVA & Target Controlled Infusion (TCI)
Why TCI? Fundamentals of pharmacokinetic models, effect-site vs plasma targeting, the clinical benefits of precise drug delivery, and individualised titration — with a live BD Alaris™ neXus PK demonstration of target adjustments.

Hands-on small-group rotations through four stations:
1 · neXus PK Setup — pump configuration, clinical safety checks, drug-library considerations
2 · TCI Titration — escalation and de-escalation, responding to changing requirements, managing procedural stimulation
3 · Troubleshooting — alarm management, unexpected patient responses, common user challenges
4 · TIVAtrainer Simulation — real-time scenarios, target adjustments, clinical interpretation

Session 5 — Advanced Clinical Case Simulations
Interactive team-based scenarios across endoscopy, interventional radiology, bronchoscopy and cardiology, plus high-risk, elderly and obese patients. Participants select sedation strategies, program TCI targets, monitor responses, manage emerging complications, and debrief on decision-making.

Prof Stefan Schraag

MD PhD FRCA FFICM · Director Medical Affairs, BD

A senior anaesthetist and intensivist with a research and academic background, Prof Schraag trained and practised in peri-operative medicine and critical care across Germany and the UK, latterly as clinical lead in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care. His work spans anaesthetic pharmacology, medical-device development and data science, with a focus on patient safety and value-based, technology-enabled care. He chaired the European Society of Intravenous Anaesthesia (EuroSIVA) until 2023 and remains on its Board.
