About this activity
This masterclass provided conscious sedation practitioners with an advanced, practical grounding in Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) and Target-Controlled Infusion (TCI) for procedural sedation. Through an interactive skills workshop, delegates explored the principles of safe, effective, titratable sedation and the pharmacology that underpins modern intravenous technique.
What was covered
The programme addressed the core concepts of procedural sedation, including:
- The principles of effective and safe titration of sedative and analgesic agents, and why titration — rather than fixed dosing — is central to individualised patient care
- The distinction between anxiolysis, analgesia, and the recognised depths of sedation, including the clinical description of moderate sedation
- The role of Target-Controlled Infusion in improving the delivery of sedation, and how it has advanced the understanding and titration of drug concentration and effect
- The pharmacology of key intravenous agents used in sedation — including propofol, remifentanil, fentanyl and midazolam — with attention to onset, offset, and their appropriate clinical use
- The importance of short-acting agents in achieving rapid, controllable sedation with prompt recovery
- Recognition and management of the risks of respiratory depression, including the compounding effect of combining sedative agents and adding opioid analgesia
- The requirement for practitioners administering sedation to be trained in airway management and resuscitation
- Patient-specific planning, including the natural variability in drug requirements between patients and the need to adjust targets — for example, lowering initial TCI targets in older patients, in whom adequate sedation may take longer to achieve
Learning outcome & assessment
On completion of the masterclass, delegates complete this online assessment to confirm the evaluation of the outcome required by the activity’s accreditation. A pass mark of 80% is required. On passing, a CPD certificate is issued.
